CALEXICO, CA – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents stopped an attempted smuggling operation last week, seizing roughly 120 pounds of fentanyl pills hidden throughout a vehicle at a California border crossing.

The discovery was made at the Calexico East Port of Entry when CBP officers encountered a 27-year-old woman driving a white sedan on September 16. The driver was traveling through the SENTRI lane, a passage typically reserved for pre-approved, low-risk travelers who are part of the Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection program.

Upon inspection, CBP officers referred the vehicle for a secondary examination. During this process, a K9 unit detected the presence of illegal drugs. Officers conducted a detailed physical search of the car and found 82 packages of blue pills concealed in multiple compartments, including the doors, spare tire, and other hidden areas within the vehicle.

The blue pills were later confirmed to be fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid that has been linked to a surge in overdose deaths across the United States. The total weight of the narcotics was 120 pounds.

“Our officers have successfully intercepted a substantial quantity of blue fentanyl pills, thwarting a significant threat to community safety,” said Roque Caza, Port Director of the Area Port of Calexico. “I am immensely proud of our officers whose continued commitment and relentless vigilance have been instrumental in disrupting drug smuggling along our southern borders.”

CBP’s Ongoing Fight Against Drug Smuggling

Following the seizure, the vehicle and the fentanyl were confiscated by CBP. The driver was placed into the custody of Homeland Security Investigations for further questioning and possible prosecution.

The SENTRI lane, where the driver was first flagged, is part of a program designed for expedited border crossings for those who have undergone strict background checks. However, this case demonstrates that even with these stringent requirements, individuals may still attempt to bring illegal substances across the border.

This interception underscores the ongoing challenge CBP faces in battling the flow of narcotics into the United States. With fentanyl being a major contributor to the opioid crisis, seizures like this play a crucial role in protecting communities from the dangers of this deadly drug.
