GRAND CANYON VILLAGE, AZ – The National Park Service said Friday that authorities are searching for a missing woman who was swept into a creek during flash flooding at Grand Canyon National Park on Thursday.
The flash flood struck Havasu Creek shortly before 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, causing several hikers to be stranded in the area.
Rescue efforts began “promptly,” with the first flight taking off before 3 p.m. to reach people stranded above and below Beaver Falls, park officials said.
As of Friday, one woman was still believed to be missing in the area, officials said.
Chenoa Nickerson, a 33-year-old woman from Gilbert, Ariz., was swept into Havasu Creek about a half-mile above the Colorado River confluence. She was not wearing a life jacket.
Nickerson is described as having brown hair and blue eyes, standing five feet, eight inches tall and weighing 190 pounds.
Park officials are asking anyone with information about Nickerson’s whereabouts to contact the NPS ISB Tip Line at (888) 653-0009.
