STERLING, MA – A worker was killed Thursday when a rock ledge collapsed at a Massachusetts quarry, burying an excavator, officials said.
The Sterling Fire Department said emergency crews responded to the quarry at 17 Stone Crest Way, off of Chocksett Road, in Sterling, about 50 miles west of Boston, shortly before 8 a.m. Thursday after a rock ledge collapsed on an excavator with a worker inside.
Crews using camera equipment found no signs of life at the scene. The worker was pronounced dead at 8:39 a.m., though crews were still working to recover the deceased worker hours later.
The fire department said the U.S. Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration sent inspectors to the site to determine the safety of continuing with retrieval efforts.
The fire department warned residents and motorists to avoid the area. Numerous other agencies also responded to the scene, including nearby fire departments, local police, state police, and the Massachusetts Division of Occupational Licensure.
Demolition and excavation company Onyx Corporation, which operates the quarry, said in a statement posted online that it was closing all locations through the weekend, resuming operations on Monday, Aug. 26.
