Rush City, Minnesota – Get ready for a whopper of a tale from the heart of Minnesota! In the small town of Rush City, a larger-than-life legend has been reeled in by none other than Paul Bunyan himself.
The Catch of the Century
Picture this: a colossal walleye weighing in at a jaw-dropping 1,999 pounds and 15.5 ounces! That’s right, folks – this monster of a fish was enticed by a 35-pound Tiger Muskie and hauled in using a 62-foot White Pine, 3-ton Logger Winch rod and reel. It’s no wonder Rush City has dubbed itself the “Walleye Capital of the World”!
A Town with a Rich History
But there’s more to Rush City than just its famous fish. This charming town has a fascinating history that dates back to the days when Dakota and Chippewa peoples called the area home, drawn by its plentiful hunting and fishing opportunities. As pioneers settled in, the town quickly grew, thanks to the abundance of logging, fur trapping, and farming prospects.
A Hub of Activity
By the time Rush City was incorporated in 1873, it had already become a bustling commercial center. Folks would ride the railroad across the St. Croix River from nearby Grantsburg, Wisconsin, to do their weekly shopping in the thriving downtown. On the way home, they’d stop to picnic at the famous blueberry patches near the river – a tradition that earned the railroad its nickname, “The Blueberry Special.”

These days, Rush City continues to prosper and grow. Its Industrial Park is one of the largest between the Twin Cities and Duluth, providing jobs for over seven hundred workers. The town’s economy is also supported by agri-business, health care, education, manufacturing, retail, corrections, and tourism.
